Historic buildings on Ponce catch fire a little over a month following another fire

This is what we know.

A fire broke out at a historic block of buildings Wednesday morning on Ponce, a little over a month following another fire at roughly the same location.

The fire appeared to occur at what used to be one of the most renowned LGBTQ+ bars in Atlanta on Thursday according to fire officials, as well as a historic Kodak building adjoining the former bar.

As of 9:25 a.m., traffic at Ponce and Argonne Ave. was shut down. Officials said all visible fire was knocked down and that investigators were en route. No injuries were reported and no rescues were necessary.

Crews responded around 7:30 a.m. near 306 Ponce De Leon Avenue, which was the old site of the Atlanta Eagle bar that became famed in the Southeast and "has hosted legendary drag performers like RuPaul and Lady Bunny that promote LGBTQ+ equality and HIV/AIDS education," the mayor's office previously said. The Kodak building next door, which still has an iconic vintage sign above it, has been around in its current state since the 1950s.

11Alive photojournalist Jojo Johnson was on scene and captured images of smoke coming out from under the Kodak sign.

This is the second fire at the location in less than 50 days. Fire officials have not provided any information on how either fire started.

In the most recent fire, officials said it started at the back of the Kodak building. The previous fire started on the Atlanta Eagle side of the joint structure.
