Two people are dead after a house fire broke out in east Atlanta on Wood Castle Lane SE off Flat Shoals Road.
Fire crews arrived to heavy flames coming out of the home and were pushed out by heat and flames, said DeKalb County Fire Chief Kenneth McKinney.
11Alive crews on scene saw fire ladders leaning into a second story window as firefighters worked to contain the blaze just before 11:30 p.m. Christmas night.
The home had "burglar bars" on the windows, which made it hard for crews to access at first.
The fire is out but the cause is still under investigation.
"This is tough on us any day, but especially on Christmas," McKinney said. "We're away from our families and responding to an incident like this ... it makes us grateful for families to come home to."
