How to protect your home, plants for winter weather

Here are some tips from the experts.

ATLANTA — Many people in Atlanta walked around town without coats on Friday.

However, you might not want to get too comfortable with the current temperature because it will change in the coming days.

How to prep plants for cold weather

This weekend, you can start by preparing your plants.

“The first thing we often forget is our plants in containers,” said Allison Smith, General Manager at Pike Nursery at the Lindbergh location.

Smith said to start treating your plants early in the day.

“The morning before those temperatures are going to drop, you want to go ahead and water all your containers. Those roots are going to soak up the water and it insulates the plant from the inside and out," Smith added.

For plants and greenery you can bring inside, Smith said you can still keep them from freezing.

“If you’ve got real delicate flowers, even in the landscape, get some frost cloth just to protect from that morning frost as well," Smith said. "You can also get bags or cover them up with a light sheet; just be sure to pull those off in the morning when the sun hits.”

Protecting your home during winter months

Austin Jacques with AJ & Sons Home Improvement said protecting your pipes should be a top priority.

“When there’s a big cold front coming in, you can leave your water... on a slight drip. Moving water doesn’t freeze," Jacques said.

Jacques added you should fight to keep cold air out.

“When it comes to your windows, as well as your doors, you don’t want any drafts and all the heat that you’re previously paying for to find its way out. I would invest in foam spray or caulk and check for any areas for leakages," Jacques said.

Don't forget about your pets!

Last but not least, animal advocates said you want to make sure your pets aren't left outside when the temperature drops, and that includes not leaving them in your car while you’re running errands.
