Clayton County inmate dies after 'medical emergency' same day he was taken into custody, deputies say

Around 1 p.m., the office stated that medical staff had seen him again after he had complained of back and wrist pain.

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. — An inmate died due to a medical emergency on Friday, according to the Clayton County Sheriff's Office.

According to the office, Jason Sandford was arrested for giving a false name and taken into the Clayton County Jail on Friday around 12:25 p.m. Deputies said Sandford was seen by jail medical staff and cleared to enter.

Around 1 p.m., the office stated that medical staff had seen him again after complaining of back and wrist pain. Sandford was "placed into an intake holding cell to finish the remainder of the booking process," deputies said. 

"Sanford began to have a medical emergency and became unresponsive," the office said in part. "Narcan was administered, CPR and other life-saving efforts were performed," 

Clayton County Emergency Services took him to Southern Regional Hospital for further treatment. At 7:18 p.m., deputies said Sandford had died. 

No other information was given about Sanford's death. 

The office said, "Our deepest condolences go out to the Sanford family from Sheriff Levon Allen and the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office."
