KENNESAW, Ga. -- FedEx is looking into how the company can support the family of a security guard who was critically shot while working on their property.
Christopher Sparkman was shot point-blank in the abdomen last April while on guard at a FedEx facility in Kennesaw. Since then, he's been in and out of the hospital for more than two dozen surgeries.
Sparkman says every day is a struggle. Since the shooting almost a year ago, he and his wife have remained mostly quiet. Last week, his wife Jamie Lynn spoke publicly about their need for financial help.
"Our most dire need right now is prayer in assistance," she said.
Jamie Lynn quit her job to be by her husband's side. The couple is trying to survive on weekly minimum workers compensation.
"There is a void and it has to be filled, so that I can continue to focus on Chris," Jamie Lynn Sparkman said.
Reps for FedEx say the company gave the Sparkmans an initial financial contribution.
In a release on Thursday, the company said they were unaware of the family's continued struggles, and they have now "communicated with the family through an attorney to explore how best to provide additional support."
The young couple recently spent their first anniversary in the hospital; Jamie Lynn says it's difficult asking for help but they have hope for the future.
"One day we will be able to return to our normal, newly-married life," she said.
