LaGrange school hit hard by flu

Long Cane Elementary sent letters home this week asking parents to keep their kids home it they're sick.

Dozens of kids are out with the flu at an elementary school in LaGrange, and teachers and administrators are trying to keep it from spreading.

On its Facebook page, the school let parents know what it's doing to keep the flu from spreading.

Custodians have sanitized the school three times, and they're bringing in a new company to sanitize with spray that last two weeks - and they're asking staff and kids to use hand sanitizer every morning. 

The Troup County School district told 11Alive they are also doing the following: 

  • Students and Staff are provided with hand sanitizer (Skinguard 24)
  • All hard surfaces are being wipe down with disinfectant and cleaning is ongoing
  • Southern Environmental treated the facility Wednesday evening with an antimicrobial solution
  • Parents are being updated on Facebook and through the "Remind App" frequently

Troup County Health Department told 11Alive it has not been asked to step in to help contain the flu, which also means there are no hard numbers yet on how many children were ill. According to the Troup County School district, 17% of students were not feeling well and were absent, though they're not sure if it was all flu-related. 

There have been two flu deaths in Georgia so far this year. Last flu season, 155 people died. 

The State Department of Health is urging everyone to get a flu shot to prevent the illness.
