GAINESVILLE, Ga. -- Swimming can resume at Lake Lanier's Don Carter State Park, the Department of Natural Resources said on Thursday.
For the first time, swimming had been suspended at the park due to increased levels of E. coli bacteria.
A Georgia State Parks official issued a warning against swimming at the Don Carter State Park beach. Higher E. coli levels were found during routine water testing, however officials were not able to say what caused the elevation.
"We can't be sure where this came from because E. coli can come from a number of sources," said Kim Hatcher the Public Affairs Coordinator.
On Thursday afternoon, DNR officials said that the latest water-quality sample results showed that bacteria levels were safe for swimming.
Officials said they would continue to take weekly samples this month.
An initial water quality test is done at all Georgia State Park swimming beaches before they open for the summer.
The park remained open even though the swim advisory was issued.
