SNELLVILLE, Ga. -- A fatal home invasion in southern Gwinnett County has left one man dead, police confirmed Thursday.
Gunfire erupted in the 3000 block of Grand Manor Trail in a subdivision south of Snellville before 5 a.m. Thursday. Police said they arrived to find the victim, 27-year-old Kemar Hawkins, with a gunshot wound. Hawkins later died at the hospital.
Police originally didn't have any leads on the incident but later spoke with family who told them it was a home invasion. Now, they're trying to find who is responsible.
"We're talking to witnesses, neighbors, people in the area to gather all that information to put together who exactly we're looking for," Wilbert Rundles said.
The victim's brother, said he was asleep until he heard the back door being kicked. Moments later, gunshots followed.
Authorities collected multiple shell casings from the scene. Investigators said Hawkins managed to get outside and when they arrived, he was lying on the side of the home.
Michael Brown lives across the street and knows Hawkins from his work as a DJ. He was shocked to hear the news.
"Nobody parks in the street, yells, screams play loud music or anything like that so its kind of strange to have something happen so close across the street," he said.
"He was a really good guy and its really sad to see something like that happen to a good person, a dad," Brown said.
Authorities are still looking for the gunman.
