SupportNow holiday care packages

This holiday season, Atlanta-based platform 'SupportNow' launched an initiative where they deliver care packages to families with a child in intensive care at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. 

Care packages include items like adaptors, charging cords and toiletry kits to help provide some relief to families during the holiday season.

Metallica's inaugural "For Whom the Band Tolls" competition 

Over the past year, the marching band at Lambert High School in Suwanee has dedicated itself to Metallica's inaugural "For Whom the Band Tolls" competition. 

Winners for the nationwide challenge, where marching bands showcase unique Metallica covers to win thousands of dollars in musical equipment, will be announced on Jan. 1.

CHRIS 180 'Holiday Wish List'

This holiday season you can donate toys directly from CHRIS 180's holiday wish list to help families across the metro have gifts Christmas morning. 

Atlanta-based nonprofit CHRIS 180 offers mental health resources to community members throughout the metro.

Wednesday, Dec. 5

Purposity's blue trees that give back 

Atlanta-based app Purposity connects the physical needs of people through their app that users can fill. Needs purchased through the app are then delivered directly to the person who requested the need. 

This Christmas season, look for Purposity's blue Christmas trees all around the metro. You can scan an ornament, find Christmas needs made by community members and fulfill it. 

Purposity trees are currently located around Atlanta at Krog Street Market, Bloom Coffee Co. and Grant Park Coffeehouse.

Trees for Tuition 

Atlanta residents still seeking a Christmas tree can have one delivered to their doorstep or pick one out in person at one of Trees for Tuition's six tree lots around the metro. 

Funds raised through tree sales will go toward scholarships for Atlanta students looking for financial aid.

Giving Tuesday 

The global organization known as 'Save the Children' invites people to donate to improve the welfare of children worldwide by donating during Giving Tuesday on Nov. 28. 

Those interested can donate directly on their website or purchase one of their three gift boxes for a loved one. Proceeds from all gift box purchases will go toward helping children in need. 

Tuesday, Nov. 21

The Atlanta Community Food Bank is asking people to donate funds, volunteer or canned goods. Click here for more information on how to donate.

Weekend Watch

This week's Weekend Watch features events that are fun for the whole family as you celebrate Thanksgiving. Here's a look at what's going on around the metro:

Aprons for Change and Georgia Stand Up

Hosea Helps is gearing up for a remarkable day of service on Nov. 23 to help feed more than 1,200 people this Thanksgiving.

Volunteers will distribute meals at several locations. Those interested in helping with the initiative can register here

Monday, Nov. 20 

Breakfast with Santa

Friends of Disabled Adults & Children (FODAC) is holding their annual 'Breakfast with Santa' fundraiser event on December 9th. 

The family-friendly event will happen from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Rehoboth Baptist Church, located at 2997 Lawrenceville Highway in Tucker, Georgia. 

The event is meant to raise funds for FODAC's Pediatric Home Medical Equipment Program, which benefits more than 300 children every year by providing them with essential mobility equipment.

Friday, Nov. 17

Gwinnett County poll official hiring events 

The Gwinnett Voter Registrations and Elections Division is holding three hiring events to recruit poll officials as they prepare for the presidential election in March. 

Residents who work as poll officials can earn up to $390 per election.

Gwinnett residents with diverse backgrounds who speak two or more languages are encouraged to attend and must bring two forms of identification to apply. 

Below is a list of the three hiring events: 

  • Friday, Nov. 17, at the Lucky Shoals Park Community Center, 4651 Britt Road, Norcross. The event takes place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 
  • Monday, Dec. 4, at the Gwinnett Voter Registrations and Elections Beauty P. Baldwin Building, Multipurpose Room, 455 Grayson Highway, Suite 200, Lawrenceville. The event takes place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. 
  • Monday, Dec. 18, at the Dacula Park Activity Building, 2735 Auburn Avenue, Dacula. The event takes place from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Holiday Home Hunt 

Holiday Home Hunt is a local Atlanta initiative that helps people discover the best decorated homes. Submissions opened Nov. 16.

People can nominate the most festive homes they come across using this link. Using the same link, people can also enter their locations and find the best decorated home near them.

The home with the highest rating is awarded $1,000 and the nominator receives $500 (up to $1,500 if self-nominated).

  • aLoft Movie Night is an event that will give back to film workers currently being affected by the writers strike. An Atlanta film custom designer, Icy White, is hosting the movie night on Saturday, Oct. 14 starting at 7 p.m. The event will be held at the aLoft downtown Atlanta location on Ted Turner Drive.

Friday, Sept. 29

  • Hands on Atlanta will hold its annual 'week of service' from Sept. 30 through Oct. 7. Known as the metro's largest week of service, 250 volunteer events and 3,000 volunteers will tackle the city's most pressing needs.
