COBB COUNTY, Ga. — A man is dead after an overnight shooting involving Cobb County Police in Mableton.
Cobb County Police said it happened in the area of 4470 Hicks Road.
Officers said they received a call around 8:30 p.m. Thursday night of a person threatening suicide. On their way to the scene, officers learned the man in question was shooting inside of a house with family inside.
Once there, Cobb County Police said he began shooting at officers, so they shot back. However, the man retreated further into the home, prompting police to activate SWAT teams.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a release Friday morning that officers "attempted to call (the man) out of the home and at some point, (he) left the house and stepped into the garage." They identified the man as a 23-year-old.
"Once again, (the man) fired his gun at officers," the GBI said. "Officers returned fire, hitting (the man)."
He died at the scene, the GBI said.
According to police, the family members inside the home included young children.
