GBI takes over case after Woodstock police officer kills 20-year-old man in shooting, authorities say

Police said the driver had broken several traffic laws, including failing to maintain their lane and did not stop initially.

WOODSTOCK, Ga. — A man was shot and killed by an officer, according to a post on Woodstock Police Department's Facebook page Friday morning. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is now looking into the shooting.

The police department said the incident happened on Thursday when an officer attempted to pull over a car for a traffic stop around 10:43 p.m. near Highway 92 and Hames Road. GBI said the 20-year-old man was driving a gray Hyundai.

Police said the driver had broken several traffic laws, including failing to maintain their lane and did not stop initially. That's when the officer used the Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT) to stop the car, causing it to crash near Highway 92 and Old Mountain Park Road in Cobb County.

In a Friday update, GBI said as officers tried to remove the man from the car an officer fired once, hurting Millard. He was ultimately removed from the car by officers who tried to offer medical aid until emergency crews arrived. He was taken to North Fulton Hospital with serious injuries, according to the GBI.

On Wednesday night, the GBI said Millard died on Saturday from his injuries.

The police department said the incident was captured on body camera, adding that the man ran off the road several times, nearly striking other drivers and tried to crash into police vehicles. Three law enforcement vehicles were damaged because of it.

According to the police department, the officer involved was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

GBI said this is the 78th shooting involving law enforcement the agency has been requested to investigate so far this year.

A statement from Woodstock Police read in part:
