ATLANTA — A man sitting in the middle of a railroad track was struck by a train but survived Friday morning, police said.
According to Atlanta police, the man was on the tracks just after midnight in northwest Atlanta when a CSX train approached and could not stop in time.
“Well, obviously they were surprised that there was a male sitting down in the middle of the tracks as they approached,” said Atlanta Police Captain Will Ricker. “They tried to obviously stop a train, which is not going to happen quickly.”
The conductor said the train was traveling just about 15-to-20 mph. Remarkably, the man sustained only a small head fracture and injuries to his legs but will be able to recover, police said.
The man was even conscious and at least somewhat alert when police found him.
“To be run over by a train and to have relatively minor injuries, where he can still talk to us, absolutely lucky,” Ricker said.
