Marietta Police issue warning about new text scam making rounds

Typically, police say the scammers are asking for money but can also attempt to hack into your phone to steal sensitive information.

"Have you ever received a text like this one?" - That's the question Marietta Police are asking as they spread the word of a new phone scam making rounds throughout the community.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, officers noted that the scam impersonates your loved ones, bosses, or friends in an attempt to get a response.

Typically, police say the scammers are asking for money but can also attempt to hack into your phone to steal sensitive information.

But, if you're unsure, try contacting the person the scammer is claiming to be by a different method, just to double-check.

After all, police say, "engaging with a hacker in any way will make it more likely that you get hacked." This could happen by simply offering a link to click on or realizing your number is legitimate to forward to other scammers.

If you do get one of these texts, police say the best thing to do next is either:

  • Block the number
  • Report it as spam
  • Delete the text
