Renter: Storage facility failed to give notice about huge leak, leaving valuables ruined

"Their response is we can't notify everybody because we can't get into the units so we don't know how many units were damaged," he said.

MARIETTA, Ga. -- A popular storage facility is under fire after some say the business failed to notify renters about a huge leak.

11Alive's Ashley Johnson talked exclusively to a renter who said he walked in to a mess.

As more rain and storms passed through the area Tuesday, David Dorrill fears his valuables at the Public Storage in Marietta are going to be a complete loss.

Dorrill said he's already thrown out furniture, pictures, and other sentimental items that can never be replaced. He said what disappoints him the most is the lack of consideration from the company.

"There is a tremendous amount of water on the bottom of my unit. Which has essentially ruined everything in my unit," he said.

He said it's been a two-week long nightmare.

"There's memories that will be tough to replace. They're worse than personal things. I valued, I just didn't have them in my home. I've learned my lesson," he said.

Nearly a week ago, Dorrill showed 11Alive's Ashley Johnson, the damage after the facility admitted there was some sort of foundation leak.

"Their response is we can't notify everybody because we can't get into the units, so we don't know how many units were damaged," he said.

Dorrill pointed out that in his contract, they spell out it is a risk using a storage unity. However, the issue is Dorrill believes there should have been some sort of notices so people could have a chance to recover their belongings.

"I've thrown a lot of things in the dumpster, and I'm sure I will have to throw out more. The mildew is pretty bad and I obviously don't want to put mildew in my home," he said.

Dorrill said after four years, he will be taking everything out of this public storage. He said the facility did offer one month rent off.

11Alive has reached out to the Public Storage headquarters multiple times about the issue. We're told only one executive, Lily Hughes, can speak on the matter. However, she has yet to say they are investigating the matter.
