Marques Mayes, honorary Monroe Co. deputy with bone cancer, passes away

Deputies and the sheriff himself spent time with the young man back in August and shared the experience with social media.

MONROE COUNTY, Ga. — A local sheriff's office shared a heartfelt goodbye on Saturday to a young boy who had become an honorary deputy just months earlier.

"Marques Mayes, our Honorary Deputy, passed away earlier today," the post read. "Everyone at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office would like to give our most sincere condolences to his family."

In August, the sheriff's office posted several photos and a brief story of how they had brought Mayes in to meet deputies and ride in a Camaro Patrol Car belonging to the sheriff's office and a musting. The sheriff's office said they were two of his favorite cars.

In that post, the sheriff's office revealed that Mayes was terminally ill with a form of bone cancer. But they also posted how they admired him for being "incredibly brave" and not letting the diagnosis dampen his spirits.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this time," the post concluded in a direct appeal to the child's family.
