ATLANTA — MARTA announced on Thursday that their airport station will be temporarily closed this spring for renovations.
Although some construction has already started, most of the renovations will take place starting on April 8. The station will reopen on May 19. In addition to the spring closure, the station will close nightly next year.
"These improvements will enhance the safety and appearance of the rail station to best serve travelers and employees at the world’s busiest airport," a Thursday release from the transit company said.
Officials with the transit company are asking riders to allow an extra 30 minutes when taking MARTA to the airport as service will still continue to the airport.
Riders will have to take a bus shuttle between the College Park Station and the North Terminal Lower Level in the North Baggage Claim. The new shuttle will run 22 hours a day from 4 a.m. until 2 a.m.
The renovations will include upgrades to replace floor tiles in the concourse and platform levels at the station. Officials added they will be adding a new canopy structure to the station as well.
MARTA added in their release that the closure will help prevent an overall construction time of 17 months. The station officially began work two years ago, completing structural work for a new elevator, signage replacement, and other upgrades.
“As we continue to serve as a vital hub for global travel, the upcoming renovations at MARTA’s Airport Station reflect our joint commitment to enhancing the travel experience,” said ATL Airport General Manager Balram “B” Bheodari.
It is unclear when the new renovations will be officially completed.
