ATLANTA — Atlanta residents and commuters may soon see a boost in MARTA accessibility with plans unveiled by Mayor Andre Dickens to add four new stations to the city's transit network.
During his State of the City address, Dickens highlighted the city's underutilized monorail system, emphasizing the need for stations in key areas to serve residents better. The proposed locations for the new MARTA stations include Murphy Crossing, Krog Street, Joseph E. Boone, and Armour Yards.
11Alive's Karys Belger spent the day gathering reactions from MARTA riders. Many expressed optimism about the potential impact of these additions on their commuting experience.
"Every once in a while, not too often. But, if I can't drive my car, I take MARTA," Josh Starks shared.
Others echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the importance of convenient transit options.
To assess current transit conditions, 11Alive embarked on a journey from the Lindbergh Station to King Memorial Station, known for its frequent visitors. The trip, which included passing through six stops before reaching the destination, took approximately 25 minutes — a timeframe that could be reduced with additional stations, according to riders.
"It's mandatory that they do that. You know, it's mandatory because people can move around and spend money, and they spend money. That's always a good thing," said one MARTA rider, emphasizing the economic benefits of improved transit.
Residents like Ocho Deocho expressed eagerness for the new stations, urging prompt action.
"They need to hurry up and do it. It should have been done two years ago," Deocho remarked.
While Dickens did not specify timelines for construction or funding sources, a MARTA spokesperson affirmed that the agency is actively exploring funding possibilities with local, state, and federal partners.
The addition of these stations reflects Atlanta's commitment to enhancing public transit options and addressing the mobility needs of its residents.
