ATLANTA — MARTA is looking for riders who want to learn more about the transit system while playing a role in the future of public transportation in metro Atlanta.
This Friday is the deadline for volunteers to apply for MARTA’s Riders’ Advisory. Formed in 2020, volunteers serve two-year terms.
“The opportunity to clear my head in the morning before going to work,” said Lequvia Ousley, whose term is about to end. “I listen to a lot of music, read books. I kind of zone out.”
Since moving to metro Atlanta in 2008, she's relied on MARTA. As one of the select volunteers on the council, she’s shared her vision for expanding the transit system.
“I would like to see transit expand further within the east corridor,” said Ousley. “I’m in the Stonecrest area. I would like to see it expand further and more options.”
Members of the Riders’ Council meet once a month. They get a behind-the-scenes look at MARTA operations and plans.
“They get to tell us how we should run our bus service, what they think of the new train fleet we’re going to have,” said MARTA’s Lyle Harris. “One of our earlier members told us about a crosswalk at the Civic Center station that’s going to be under construction.”
Members of the council are encouraged to talk to neighbors about MARTA projects and gather their thoughts on the future.
“It’s about increasing the circle of influence that MARTA provides the community,” said Harris.
Lequiva Ousley feels her time on the advisory board was well spent.
“Be prepared to learn more about MARTA and meet fellow riders,” said Ousley.
MARTA will announce the final slate of candidates on April 24th.
