MORGAN, Ga. — Editor's Note: This story has been updated to better reflect the age of the deceased.
For a second week in a row, the family of a metro Atlanta man killed while serving time at the Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) prison reached out to 11Alive asking for help in getting answers about their loved one's homicide.
Last week, Michael Archer reached out to us regarding his son, Ryan Archer, 26, of Griffin, who the GDC said died after an altercation with an inmate at Coastal State Prison on December 13.
"The main thing is, no one has told us anything," he said.
Following 11Alive's coverage last Tuesday, Eutha Dorsey reached out on social media.
"I have not heard one word about my son," she said in a Facebook message.
Her son, Martel Dorsey, 32, of Atlanta, died on November 24. In a statement from the GDC, they confirmed the following:
We can confirm the death of Inmate Martel Dorsey on November 24, 2023 as a result of an altercation. Staff witnessed inmate Dorsey run out of the dorm as he was being chased by several other inmates. They immediately went to Dorsey and began rendering aid and called EMS. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
"I'm angry, I'm mad as hell," Eutha said. "The fact a whole month has went by and I still don't know anything."
She said her son wasn't given a death sentence. She admitted he's no angel but he was only serving a few months after violating his probation. The GDC said it was tied to a couple of charges, including entering an auto and theft by shoplifting.
"I feel no child should go in to serve their time and not come home," she explained.
Eutha said Martel had already been approved to be released back in July and they were just waiting for all the paperwork to be signed to make it official.
"He should have actually been home before his birthday in October," she said.
However, his 32nd birthday came and went. Martel remained locked up.
Eutha said the last time she talked to her son was by text on November 23.
'My last text from him was on Thanksgiving, 'He said, I love you,'" she said.
Eutha mentioned her son had only been at Calhoun State Prison for five days.
The day after Thanksgiving, she said they called to inform her Martel had been in an altercation. She said they didn't say anything about what happened to him.
As she was driving to the hospital to check on her son, Eutha got a call that would shatter her world.
'The warden told me my son didn't make it," she explained.
Eutha said she literally ran off the road and had to stop to pull herself together before continuing on to the emergency room.
'It was so hard to accept my son laying there and they still had all these tubes in his body. Blood was still dripping everywhere," she said.
It was a few minutes later, a doctor walked into the ER who would be the first person to tell her what actually happened to her son.
"He explained to me that my son had been stabbed up very bad and that he tried to do everything he could," Eutha said.
Martel's body was turned over to the coroner and transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's (GBI) crime lab for an autopsy, which has still not been released to his mom.
His body was returned to her earlier this month.
"The hardest thing was for me to close the casket on my son. That was the hardest thing I've ever done," she explained.
Over the last month, Eutha said the GDC has avoided her calls and not told her anything about her son's attack. She said it was actually texts from inmates inside the prison who got her number somehow and told her how her son was killed.
"They told me he was stabbed multiple times by up to seven young men," she said.
Something she just can't understand. Eutha said her son never mentioned having any problems with anyone inside and was excited to be getting out and moving on with his life.
"The young men took a very loving person. They stole something from me that hurts the most," she explained. "And for them, whoever they are, now you just gave your life away, just senseless."
The GDC did not mention any arrests being made in Martel's death but said his death is being investigated by the GDC's Office of Professional Standards.
Eutha said, no matter what, "My son didn't deserve that."
If the medical examiner officially ruled Martel's death as a homicide, it would make the second one this year at Calhoun State Prison, according to the GDC.
Eutha is now pushing for Gov. Brian Kemp to step in and do something about the prison system across the state.
"This is on his watch and he needs to do something about the system," she explained.
