Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birth home sold to the National Park Service

The sale was finalized Nov. 27.

ATLANTA — The birth home of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. has been sold to the National Park Service.

The sale comes after 30 years of the Park Service tending the upkeep of the home that the Civil Rights icon was born in.

Last month, the King Family negotiated the sale of the property after owning the home for more than 100 years.

In a statement, the National Park Foundation said it was honored to partner with the King Center and the National Park Service to help protect the home.

"As a part of the National Park System, this national treasure of such historic significance and meaning will have the ongoing support needed to preserve it for future generations and to ensure that all people are able to access and share the stories and lessons it holds," the statement read.

Officials did not say how much the Auburn Avenue home sold for. The sale was finalized Nov. 27.

The home will continue to be open to the public.
