Schools remains on lockdown after physical altercation at Maynard H. Jackson High School, 'no gun found, students safe': officials

Atlanta Public Schools spokesperson said the school will remain on lockdown for the rest of the day.

ATLANTA — One student is hurt after a physical altercation led to an interior lockdown at Maynard H. Jackson High School in Atlanta on Friday morning. A text to parents from the principal said students are safe.

A spokesperson for Atlanta Public Schools said that despite staff receiving reports of a gun on campus, "no gun was found," but the school will remain on lockdown for the rest of the day out of an "abundance of caution." During the lockdown, students will not transition between classes.

District officials said several students were involved in the altercation, and it stemmed from an ongoing dispute in the community. The student who was injured was taken to a local hospital around 8:45 a.m. APS officials added during the altercation it appears a student made a gesture as if they were pulling something out of their pocket. Although no gun was discovered, two knives were discovered but were not used in the altercation, officials said.

According to an APS spokesperson, all students involved will be disciplined and APS Police will conduct a full investigation of the incident to determine if there will be any charges.

APS also said that there were social media rumors circulating reporting an alleged "active shooter," but the district quickly said there was no active shooter situation. 11Alive has not independently seen these social media reports.

The text sent to parents reported the lockdown was taken out of precaution "while we investigate a situation that occurred this morning at arrival. "At this time, all students and staff are safe," the text continued. "I will send an update as soon as I can, but again, students are safe."

All afterschool activities were canceled Friday afternoon, but games will still be played, the school district said.

"We have asked parents this weekend to take some time to talk to their students about appropriate ways to resolve conflicts," a statement from APS said. "If they need assistance with these conversations, we have resources and personnel available to help. The safety and well-being of all of our students and employees will always be a top priority here at Maynard Jackson and in all Atlanta Public Schools."
