HAMPTON, Ga. -- A Hampton woman was killed in by a Henry County Police officer in an officer-involved shooting Thursday afternoon.

At about 4:30 p.m., officers were sent to a home on Cobb Court after three separate 911 hang-up calls from a distraught-sounding and crying female. When officers arrived, they could hear a screaming female voice from inside the home. Due to the screaming voice and the 911 hang-up calls, the officers forced their way into the home.

According to Henry County Police Lieutenant Joey Smith, upon entering, officers found a distraught and crying woman armed with a handgun. The officers made several attempts to get the woman to drop the handgun. When the woman made what police called an offensive move, one of the police officers fired his weapon at the woman, striking her once.

She was transported to Piedmont Henry Hospital, where she died a short time later.

The woman's husband arrived at the home shortly after the shooting incident. He had also been speaking to 911 dispatchers regarding his wife while he was on the way home. Investigators were looking into the reason for the 911 calls from the woman.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is heading up the investigation into the shooting. The two officers involved were placed on administrative leave with pay pending the results of the investigation. GBI officials said they would reveal the identity of the woman Friday.
