McDONOUGH, Ga. – Chase Maddox brought laughter and light to the Locust Grove police department.
Lt. Matthew Long spoke about the goofy side of Maddox during his time with the department. Long told stories about his character and how ready he was for his job.
To show Maddox’s personality, Long told a story of a time when Maddox was in his office and began fiddling with a small transformer on Long’s desk.
“He turned that toy more ways than it was never intended to go and finally I told him to put it down before he broke it,” Long said. “Then he preceded to pick up everything else on my desk until I kicked him out of the office."
This telling brought laughter to the congregation.
“That was Chase. It didn’t matter if you were the Chief, didn’t matter if you were the clerk, didn’t matter if you were his lieutenant, nothing in your office was safe.”
Long said he has hundreds of stories and welcomed Maddox’s family to the department so they can hear them for years to come.
The 26-year-old Locust Grove Police officer died after being shot three times as he assisted deputies in serving a warrant on Feb. 9. Two Henry County Sheriff's deputies were wounded, and the suspect, Tierre Guthrie, was killed.
Maddox was a five-year veteran of the Locust Grove police department after serving in the National Guard. He and his wife had a young child and another on the way at the time of his death. His wife gave birth to a healthy baby boy on Feb. 13, just days after his passing.
