Officer shoots, kills driver in Midtown Atlanta road rage incident, authorities say

It unfolded at the intersection of West Peachtree Street NE and 13 St. NW by a Whole Foods grocery store.

ATLANTA — A road rage incident ended with an Atlanta police officer firing their gun Tuesday night at a busy Midtown Atlanta intersection. A man is dead and a woman is stable in the hospital, according to investigators.

Atlanta Police Deputy Chief Charles Hampton Jr. said the it all started after 8 p.m. at the intersection of West Peachtree Street NE and 16th Street NW when officers on patrol noticed commotion from two vehicles, a Mercedes and a Tesla.

A 30-year-old woman, who was in one of the vehicles, got on top of the other vehicle and was thrown from it, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said. She was hurt from the impact and is stable in the hospital, police added. 11Alive has chosen not to identify her.

That's when GBI says the driver of that vehicle, 35-year-old James Wilborn, and an APD officer, who was not in uniform, got into a fight.

"The officer attempted to stop Wilborn from leaving the scene. Wilborn ignored repeated commands from the officer. A fight happened between the officer and Wilborn, which resulted in the officer firing his weapon and hitting Wilborn," the GBI said in a statement.

The GBI, nor police, said if any other weapons were found at the scene.
