2 women headed to doctor's appointment reported missing

A Mattie's Call has been issued.

TUCKER, Ga. — DeKalb County Police need help finding two missing older women.

Officers said Maudine Phelps, 71, and Phoebe Jackson-Nemeth, 63, have been missing since March 5. Phelps is a black woman and Jackson-Nemeth is white.

Phelps has early onset dementia and Jackson-Nemeth is deaf and can only communicate through sign language and writing on paper.

11Alive's Hope Ford spoke to Phelps' family members who said their mother used to be the caretaker for Jackson-Nemeth. Her son said the pair were headed to a doctor's appointment when they got turned around and got lost. They haven't been seen since.

Phelps' daughter, Anitra Daniels, said her mom called the office trying to get directions, but she got turned around even more. Phelps then called Daniels and told her she was going home and would reschedule the appointment.

That was the last time she spoke with her mother.

When Daniels realized her mom didn't make it home, she's tried calling her but it appeared her phone had died. They found her charger at home.

"She can’t call me and she can’t call nobody and say 'we’re here' and we’ll just say stay there and we’ll come to you," she explained.

The family went out searching for the two around 7 p.m. Tuesday and continued until about 3:30 a.m. the next day. They then filed a report - and so did one of Jackson-Nemeth's family members.

Daniels said she is overwhelmed with the situation, but said she has no choice but to stay strong for her mother.

“We’ve been looking since we got up this morning," she explained. "We started in Stone Mountain and we just going to backtrack everywhere where she grew up, where her mom stayed, where she used to live."

Daniels said she is determined to find her mother - just as determined she believes her mother will be to remember.

"I believe she’s going to try to get back to where she began," she said.

As the sun goes down on another day of searching, Daniels hopes her mom simply pulled over somewhere and is waiting for them to find her. In the meantime, she vowed she will not stop searching.

“I will do anything basically possible to find my mom," she promised.

Police said the two women are traveling in a Sliver 2018 Hyundai Elantra with the Georgia tag CHE8235.

Daniels said her mother is not the type to roll down the window or approach anyone at night, so if someone sees them, she hopes they'll call police right away.

Anyone with information about their whereabouts is asked to contact the DeKalb County Police Department Special Victims Unit at 770-724-7710.
