RABUN COUNTY, Ga. — It's been more than 40 days since 77-year-old Vaughn Callenback was last seen leaving a local bank in Rabun County.
On July 5, Callenback stopped by the United Community Bank in Clayton, which was his last confirmed sighting.
The Rabun County Sheriff's Office said two days later, on July 7, his truck was found backed down an embankment in a heavily wooded area near the Old Coleman River Road.
At the time Callenback's truck was discovered, the Rabun County Sheriff's Office said he had not yet been reported missing.
On July 13, when his family realized no one had heard from him, a missing person's report was filed with the Rabun County Sheriff's Office.
The sheriff's office said on the following day, July 14, authorities went back out to the area where Callenback's truck was found to conduct a search of the area.
The Rabun County Office of Emergency Management said over the next six days, multiple agencies searched by ground and air, covering 222 miles.
On Thursday, the Rabun County Sheriff's Office said the investigation into Callenback's disappearance is active and ongoing. The sheriff's office confirmed it asked the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) to help them in the search for Callenback.
The sheriff's office also posted a video update Thursday about the case.
"We just wanted to let you know that this is very important to us as much as it is the community," Chief Deputy Beth Darnell. "This is an active, ongoing case. It is not closed and it has never been closed."
Authorities are asking anyone who has seen Callenback since July 5 or knows anything about his disappearance to come forward and share that information. You can call the sheriff's office at 706-782-3612 or the GBI at 1-800-597-8477.
