Man reported missing after being found dead in Georgia creek

Investigators said Matthew Edward Scruggs' body was found hours before family members reported him missing.

CATOOSA COUNTY, Ga. — Investigators now believe someone found dead in a north Georgia creek is a man who had not been seen in three days.

The investigation began on Saturday around 12:50 p.m. when the Catoosa County Sheriff's Office responded to a body in South Chickamauga Creek near Graysville Road.

But during the process of investigating the death, Saturday, they were contacted by a family member reporting 30-year-old Matthew Edward Scruggs of Ringold missing.

Scruggs hadn't been seen since May 22 when investigators say he took a vehicle he was planning to buy down to the Tri-State Steel Drum property where he went fishing.

They soon realized the body and the missing man were the same person. His body has since been taken to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab for autopsy.

Authorities said that Scruggs' cause of death isn't yet known though there were no obvious signs of injury on his body.
