Rapper Dee-1 played to a packed house at South Atlanta High School. His message was one of financial literacy.

Dee-1’s career has taken an interesting turn ever since he released a song about paying his college student loans back. Called Sallie Mae Back, the song chronicles Dee-1’s struggles to pay back what he owed after he graduated from college.

The song was a hit, not just with fans, but with Price Waterhouse Coopers. The multinational professional services network has a financial literacy program, even helping employees pay down their student debt.

Dee-1, a former middle school math teacher, is traveling with PwC now, spreading his message of shooting for your dreams, while being responsible for them.

“I’m a young black man, with dreadlocks, from New Orleans, who is a rapper. When I walk into these classrooms with black and brown students and they look at me, they’re like, ‘Wait, that dude is one of us,’ before I even open my mouth,” he said to the Washington Post. “My voice is authentic to them, my life experience is authentic to them, so when I hit them with the knowledge, the financial literacy piece, they’re all ears.”
