ATLANTA -- Atlanta Police say a mother shot her own son in their apartment Tuesday morning.

Police were called to the 500 block of University Avenue and found 4-year-old Jamari Todd shot in the back.

"Initially, it was a mystery," said Atlanta Police Major Adam Lee III. "The only person that was there was the victim, and he's only four years old and he's fighting for his life right now."

When police initially questioned his mother, Patricia Todd, 42, they said there was something that was just not right. She had no explanation of what happened inside her apartment Tuesday morning around 10:15 AM.

Now she's charged with aggravated assault, cruelty to children and tampering with evidence.

Lee said investigators found no bullet holes in the apartment to indicate the child was hit by a stray bullet. Eventually they found a handgun hidden in the apartment they believe Todd used to shoot her son. They don't know if the shooting was accidental or intentional.

Robert Taylor, the boy's Uncle, was surprised when he found out about what happened to his nephew. "I was just over here yesterday playing with him," he said.

When asked if his sister would shoot the boy intentionally Taylor said "I don't think so, more likely it was an accident."
