GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — Multiple families are displaced after a fire ignited at an apartment complex in Gwinnett County on Wednesday, officials said.

According to Gwinnett County Fire, the department responded to a report of an apartment fire at The Elliot Apartments on Northridge Way NW shortly after 3:40 p.m.

When firefighters arrived, they found heavy fire blowing out the windows and attic of a three-story apartment building. Crews then observed a man attempting to break a window on the front side of the building and told firefighters that a child was trapped inside.

Rescue teams rapidly entered the apartment and searched for victims, but it was determined the apartment was empty upon arrival, a release said.

Fire crews used multiple hoses to control the flames and were able to extinguish them by 4:19 p.m. Utility companies also responded to the area to secure utilities.

Residents confirmed the apartment building was empty at the time of the fire, officials said. Apartment managers then worked with the American Red Cross to help the twenty tenants displaced by the fire.

Investigators said the cause of the fire was undetermined.
