The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in by the Athens-Clarke County Police to investigate an officer-involved shooting.
The suspect 63-year-old Carlton Steve Brooks, was killed in the incident, authorities said.
Athens-Clarke Police said they responded to a "Peeping Tom" call at a home on Hull Road around 11:40 p.m. Saturday. Police said they spoke to the victim who identified a man as the suspect. They contacted the suspect at his home.
According to GBI, officers knocked on the door and announced that they were police officers. Before answering the door, one of the officers reportedly saw a man inside with a weapon. The officers moved away from the door and gave repeated commands to put down the weapon, according to GBI.
Brooks allegedly opened the door with a shotgun in his hands and GBI said he pointed the weapon towards one of the officers. Law enforcement fired twice.
Athens-Clarke Police rendered aid to the man at the scene until EMS arrived. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Athens-Clarke said the officer was placed on administrative leave with pay.
This is still an ongoing investigation.
