Follow these tips to fight holiday stress

A local doctor is helping people avoid holiday-related stress and sickness, using some simple techniques.

CUMMING, Ga. — Whether you’re ready or not, the holiday season is upon us.

It’s a time for family, friends - and lots of food, all of which can bring great joy. But, this time of year can also be chaotic, causing mass amounts of stress for travelers, shoppers, and everyone in between.

Don’t panic! There are some simple ways to avoid getting overwhelmed, without skipping the holiday parties.

“A lot of the things that people are suffering from today are totally avoidable,” Dr. Sten Ekberg said. “People just don't understand what it is they need to do.”

Ekberg owns Wellness For Life Chiropractic in Cumming. He says we’ve entered a time of year that can be problematic, unless the necessary measures are taken.

“We call this the holiday seasons, but at the same time, it's the cold and flu season,” Ekberg said. “The two things that shut down your immune system more than anything are stress and sugar, and during the holidays, we increase both.”

Wellness For Life offers free health seminars, twice each week, and this Tuesday’s event focused on managing stress. Don’t overdo it with the sweet treats, Ekberg said. And make time for some simple breathing exercises, because they can make a world of difference.

“Breathe in for a count of four or five [seconds] … hold it for seven or eight [seconds] … then breathe out fully for seven or eight seconds,” Ekberg instructed. “Once you're done with that, you've kind of centered yourself.”

Follow that with a slow breath - in for five seconds and out for five seconds. It helps your body find balance, he says.

Ekberg also has a successful YouTube channel which he updates twice a week. He says his mission is educate.
