CUMMING, Ga. — Caroline Ryan, owner and founder of the popular website Because Mom, has come up with a unique networking event. Or, at the very least, she’s added a new twist to an activity that’s been around for years. On Friday night, Ryan and her colleagues will host a women-only “Friendship Speed Dating” event.
“When I started Because Mom in October 2017, I always had it in my mind,” Ryan said. “But I had no way to pull this off. And it's very strange. I always get looks when I try to talk about it.”
Ryan has now partnered with another local mom, Jessica Lusk, who’s helping plan the event.
“We have created several games and several questions that we will be asking the moms,” Lusk said. “We will be going around, just getting to know each other. Some of them will be monitored questions and some just ice breakers - simple get-to-know-you kind of questions.”
Ryan and Lusk say the goal of the event is to give women an activity they can enjoy on their own without having to worry about kids or spouses.
“It's just kind of getting us, as moms and as women, out and away from the technology and the phones, allowing us to come mingle,” Ryan said. “We are all sucked into the telephones and texting and stuff, so it's just nice to be able to put them away.”
Lusk agrees, saying it’s good for even the most dedicated mother to occasionally spend time away from her children.
“It makes life a little more enjoyable when you can invite someone into the nitty-gritty of your home, with the dishes in the sink, the crumbs on the floor, and the kids being crazy… and just enjoy each other's company,” Lusk said. “If you have those relationships, those strong relationships away from the kiddos, you're going to bloom, and you're going to be a better mom, a better wife, a better you.”
Friday's event starts at 7 p.m. at Community Cup Coffeehouse in Cumming.
