Not the typical snow day for students in Forsyth County

Schools were closed, but many were still given assignments and expected to study.

CUMMING, Ga. — It was expected to be a snowy and slick commute for most of Forsyth County today prompting Monday's announcement of school and government office closures. Many residents were surprised to wake up to mostly dry conditions this morning, raising questions about Forsyth County’s decision to cancel school for inclement weather.

“I think it was made a big deal when it really wasn't,” Cumming resident Ashley Holland said. “They anticipated some snow.”

Cumming did have reports of a few flurries throughout on Tuesday morning, but it only lasted momentarily never sticking to the ground. Many residents were found making light of the "weather emergency" or lack there of online via the Focus on Forsyth Facebook page posting "memes," comments and even pictures of their snowless backyards. Meanwhile, an unusually high number of students were hanging out in Community Cup Coffeehouse, and not just to get their caffeine fix. Some students were still assigned homework despite the school closure.

“We have online learning days,” Marybeth Yonk said. “Our teachers just post assignments online, and then we have to finish them.

Yonk is a junior at Forsyth Central High School, and she said it best in response to today’s not-so-snowy snow day.

“I feel like we would have been more productive at school, but it's good for everybody to have a break every once in awhile,” Yonk said.
