The Place of Forsyth Co. offers big savings to local teachers

For one day only, Forsyth County teachers can stock up on back-to-school supplies.

CUMMING, Ga. — For more than 40 years, “The Place” has served Forsyth County residents, assisting families with basic needs. Now, the non-profit is branching out and lending a helping to local educators.

“On Saturday, July 13th, we are having a teacher re-use store,” outreach coordinator Melina Holt said. “We're inviting all the Forsyth County teachers to come and be able to shop for free for items they need for their classrooms.”

To gain access to the school supplies, teachers just need to show his or her badge at the front. New teachers who do not have a badge yet are asked to bring something that shows they have a contract with the county.

“We're going to have them sign in so we can know how many people we have come in, then we will also give them a 25 percent off coupon to the thrift store,” Holt said. “We're doing a big back to school sale, so we have discounts already, and then they'll get 25 percent off of that.”

If the event goes well, Holt says it’s likely they will do it again next year. Any supplies that do not get picked up this weekend will either go to the thrift shop or saved for a similar event in the future.

“This is a great time to recycle and be able keep things out of the landfill, and be able to reuse them,” Holt said. “We’ve got a lot of great books. We've got binders, games, puzzles, so a lot of things teachers just need for their classroom.”

She says the donations came from individuals plus six participating schools. The event will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and the last two hours will specifically be for homeschool teachers.

“We have plastic bags that we provide to them, so they can fill those up,” Holt said. “Certain items, depending on if we have a smaller amount, we may have limitations so everybody has an opportunity to get some of the items. We do have some larger items that we’ll probably do like one large item per person.”
