Local soccer team wins first state championship in school's history

The students and staff at St. John Bosco Academy are celebrating the success of the soccer team after a big win.

CUMMING, Ga. — St. John Bosco Academy celebrates winning the schools first state championship after defeating Halo with a 3-2 victory.

“The season was really exciting heading in,” assistant soccer coach Claire Sullivan said. “We had a really strong roster and we knew it. Even in the first day of practice, you could hear them say ‘this is our season. This is our year.’ It was a little rocky at first, but we ended up with a great season.”

If you’ve driven by the academy in the last couple weeks, you couldn't miss the giant banner that reads “Congratulations 2019 state champs”  in the front entrance of the school yard.

Director of Soccer, Dana Brenner, says the parents were so excited about the win, they went and purchased the banner as a gift to the school.

“The championship game was on a Saturday,” Brenner said. “Then, we came back to school on Tuesday with the trophy, and one of our parents had left us a surprise - this enormous sign. The team was so thrilled. It was just a nice surprise for the whole community, so we're very thankful.”

It was a fitting gift for the school which just won its first state championship.

The team finished the season strong with a total of 11 wins, 0 losses, and 1 tie game.
