Kirkwood residents band together to finish neighborhood dog park

Dog lovers volunteered at Gilliam Park Saturday to revitalize part of Gilliam Park

ATLANTA — East Atlanta has no shortage of dogs and dog lovers.

For many Kirkwood dog owners, there are not many places nearby to allow their dog to roam free.

That is why the Kirkwood Neighborhood Organization and the Kirkwood Business Owners Association are working to bring a dog park to the community.

Members of the Kirkwood community volunteered at the future site of the dog park at Gilliam Park Saturday to create an inviting space for their furry friends.

"We came out bright and early and we're helping as much as we can," resident Neelam Sachania said.

Throughout the morning, volunteers shoveled, pulled weeds and manicured the landscape.

Croft Pendergraph, a Kirkwood resident and business owner, said this is his way of giving back to the community.

"My wife and I foster dogs so we like to give back to the community," he said. "With this being so close to us, this is something that we'll be able to enjoy."

Kaley Volkmann has a 7-month-old puppy and is excited about being able to bring her to this new dog park. She also said the dog park will bring the community together.

"I think this is a great way to bring the community together. It's a great way to meet people and let your dogs have fun while you're at it," she said.

The Kirkwood Neighborhood Organization is currently working with the City of Atlanta to finalize an opening date for the dog park.
