EAST POINT, Ga. — Imagine living in home where your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and all the amenities are just within feet of each other.
It’s a concept Will Johnston and others with the MicroLife Institute are hoping will catch on in metro Atlanta.
“Our motto is ‘less space, more life,' ” said Johnston.
A “tiny house” is described as a fully-sustainable home that is less than 400 square feet. While a small home, more than 400 square feet, is a “cottage.”
“If you’re in a smaller space it doesn’t take as much to heat or cool, leaving you with more money to live and enjoy life. You’ll also reduce your carbon footprint,” said Johnston.
Johnston says people who live in neighborhoods of tiny homes will naturally interact more, and live outside.
For example, in New York City where most live in smaller spaces, their home is essentially just where they sleep, and spend the rest of their time enjoying the city.
This lifestyle is something Johnston intends to help bring to East Point with the Eco Cottages project. While the construction is still in the engineering stages, it has been approved to move forward.
“The whole idea is to build a micro-pocket neighborhood. It will be 40 homes ranging from 500 square feet to 1000. Laid out in a way that people can interact with each other more than a suburban design,” he said.
In addition to the economic benefits and helping the environment by using less resources, it will push communities like East Point to what Johnston feels are the neighborhoods of the future.
“East Point has access to Atlanta, to the airport,” said Johnston, “The fact that it’s going through this new period, where it’s finding their identity, I think it’s brilliant.
If you’d like to experience how micro-living works, the Tiny House Festival
will take place in Atlantic Station May 11th and 12th.
