East Point businesses support new human trafficking law

Bars, clubs, gas stations and other designated businesses are required to post a sign with a hotline number saying they're a "safe haven" for victims of human trafficking.

EAST POINT, Ga. — A new law in East Point is hoping to crack down on human trafficking with the help of local business owners.

Bars, clubs, gas stations and other designated businesses are required to post a sign with a hotline number saying they're a "safe haven" for victims of human trafficking.

East Point lawmakers say this is a preventative measure before the issue has a chance to hit the city.

Owners and customers at U-Bar say they're looking forward to seeing these signs all over the city.

“I think that's good to raise the awareness to keep that number up. It will be on multi-screens,” said senior manager Philip Harden, “That way when people have issues they'll have many avenues to have a way out.”

Atlanta resident, Nicholas Ransom feels it will help protect the community, "I hope it makes everyone else feel a little safe. Makes everyone notice 'hey we're watching you,’ “ he explained.

The law was passed in October of 2018, so law enforcement is giving businesses some time to start posting.

The penalty for not complying will start at a $500 fine.
