East Point considers regulations for Airbnb, short-term rentals

Dozens stood in line to make sure their voices were heard. City leaders are deciding if, or how they will regulate the growing trend of short term and Airbnb rentals in East Point.

EAST POINT, Ga. — It was a packed house at East Point City Council’s town hall meeting Monday night.

City leaders are deciding if, or how they will regulate the growing trend of short term and Airbnb rentals.

Dozens stood in line to make sure their voices were heard.

Most who spoke up were Airbnb hosts who say they appreciate having the extra money.

“I’ve been doing it for years, even before I moved to East Point. I’ve never had any problems." said Rodney Lewis.

Some aren’t sure why the City wants to get involved.

“I feel that Constitutionally they should not be able to regulate. They shouldn’t be able to step in and say what I can and cannot do on my property,” said Diane Matthew.

But others said it's unfair to constantly have different people living next door.

“Too many children are already getting snatched. So, you don’t need people that you don’t know anything about,” said Jean Wilson.

Council says they will continue to discuss what they’ve learned from the meeting, and have not yet decided on what action they will take.
