EAST POINT, Ga. — The city of East Point proudly unveiled the crown jewel of their downtown revitalization, a brand-new city hall. Sitting right in the heart of downtown, this new 32,130 square feet facility stands on the site of the former defunct fire station at the intersection of East Point Street and West Cleveland Avenue.
On Tuesday, April 30, dignitaries and residents gathered in the warm Spring morning to cut the ribbon on the new building.
“We are so proud that our new City Hall will be a community building for all to enjoy and that our staff and city leaders will have a new place to call home,” said Mayor Deana Holiday Ingraham. “The city is leading the way and our state-of-the-art facility will be catalytic for equitable economic development in our downtown area.”
Currently, the administrative offices have occupied the fourth floor of Jefferson Station. The new location will feature a multi-purpose facility that will include city offices, City Council Chamber, and a remarkable water feature. The grounds themselves will offer an outdoor amphitheater designated for public events and activities.
"This is the heart of the city and we want people to come here and feel comfortable here," Councilwoman Sharon Shropshire said.
After the opening festivities, tours of the building were offered, followed by Mayor Ingraham's State of the City Address in the new Council Chambers.
City offices will be closed on Friday, May 3, for the official moving day in the building. The first day of business in the new offices for East Point government will be Monday, May 6.
The city hall is just the latest announcement for the City of East Point. A new fire station, a new Downtown Streetscape Project and Station Soccer program have all been opened or had a recent groundbreaking.
"The Southside as a whole is a diamond in the rough. These particular advancements and best-in-class facilities represent the goal of where we're trying to go," said Councilman Elton Alexander.
