Gwinnett Animal Shelter remains open to the public

Shelter officials say they have not seen any 'dumping' due to coronavirus.

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. — The Gwinnett Animal Shelter remains one of the few county buildings still open, and shelter officials say are in need of volunteers.

Chandler Giddes, Deputy Division Director of the animal shelter, says that they are still open to the public, but their policies have slightly changed in response to the coronavirus.

"We're doing the best that we can with staff and coronavirus related procedures, while still making the homeless animals available to prospective families. With this said, we're now only allowing 10 people at a time into the facility," explains Giddes.

While Giddes says that have not seen any dumping of animals due to COVID-19, they do have almost 150 dogs and just over 20 cats. The deputy director expressing concern over the possibility of a decline in outgoing pets.

"The longer this ting continues, the more we'll have to limit the amount of pets coming in, so we're really encouraging folks that if they find a pet to keep it and become a friendly foster for us," says Giddes.

According to Giddes, the shelter is following all county mandated policies and procedures to ensure the cleanliness and safety of shelter animals and guests.

The Shelter is open to the public Monday through Thursday from noon to 6:00 pm, and Friday through Saturday from  11:00 am – 4:00 pm. To see available pets, click here.
