LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — In a growing national trend, Gwinnett County police have started implementing the use of ‘cruise lights.’ A term adopted for the non-flashing lights mounted on top of police cruisers. As opposed to the typical multi-colored flashing used during hot pursuits or pullovers, cruise lights are used for more routine purposes. Many officers use them for routine purposes such as patrols of neighborhoods, retail or commercial environments.
The primary purpose of cruise lights is not intended for traffic stops. If you are traveling behind a patrol car using cruise lights, you do not need to pull over. As it stands currently, the utility of cruise lights are at the officer’s discretion.
