LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — School's out and kids have a little extra free time during the day.
Of all the ways they could spend their time off, learning safety tips from their neighborhood first responders may not be a bad idea.
The City of Lawrenceville hosted its monthly Chill 'N the Ville event Friday. There is a different theme every month and July's theme was safety.
Throughout the day, children and their families met police officers from the Lawrenceville Police Department and had the opportunity to venture into the Fire Safety House which is a mobile unit that simulates a fire situation through the use of non-toxic smoke and warm surfaces.
"This is important because they [children] will know how to recognize people that will come to the rescue," parent Natasha Crumby said.
"It's a very family-fun event and I always like to make sure they're [children] are plugged in."
Lawrenceville police Officer Christopher Carey said thousands of people will attend the Chill 'N the Ville event throughout the course of the day.
"Community involvement is the keyword. Any information we can get out in the public is good," he said.
The next Chill 'N the Ville event will be Friday, August 2.
