LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — Mayor Judy Jordan Johnson has announced that she will not seek re-election to the office, and will step away at the end of 2019.
Johnson is a lifelong Lawrenceville resident who has spent the last nine years as the city's mayor. Before that time, she served on the city council from 2003 to 2008.
"It has been an incredible ride," Jordan said via email, "and I hope the foundations laid during my tenure with the City will provide future elected leaders the opportunity to continue moving Lawrenceville forward."
Jordan was a math teacher at Central Gwinnett High School, who won Teacher of the Year in 1990.
Her father, Hilliard Rhodes Jordan, also served as the mayor of Lawrenceville, serving eight two-year terms between 1962 and 1988.
Jordan will step away proud of the progress Lawrenceville has made during her term.
"My goal when I first took office was to have Lawrenceville to be the 'buzz word' for where people would think to go to spend their time," Jordan said. "I truly believe that the County Seat has become the heartbeat for Gwinnett, and a unique sense of place for our people. God has blessed me with the opportunity to serve the people of the City of Lawrenceville for nearly a decade, and I appreciate their trust in me with every step."
