LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The City of Lawrenceville approved plans for a new urban dog park to cater to the needs of the city's dog residents and their owners.
According to a release by the city, the city council approved construction bids for a new park during a Feb. 26 meeting. The new park is set to be located in an area of the Lawrenceville Lawn at the corner of Jackson and Luckie Streets. The city said the park aims to be a hub of activity and enjoyment for dogs and their humans.
Mayor David Still said that the city has received numerous requests over the years to have a dog park.
"We are delighted to fulfill this need within our community," Still said. "The chosen location, adjacent to the Lawrenceville Lawn, is ideal for its high activity and accessibility to residents."
The .41-acre park will have separate areas designated for large and small dogs. The areas will be separated by an eight-foot-wide concrete pathway with decorative security fencing enclosing it. There will also be double-gated entrances for safety purposes. In addition, the park will have an artificial turf surface with an automatic irrigation system and dog waste bins to promote a sanitary environment.
In terms of amenities, it will have shade structures and benches, open areas, dog agility equipment and water fountains to keep the animals hydrated. The park will mirror the Lawrenceville Lawn's visiting hours -- being open during the day.
A city spokesperson wrote that the decision to create the park comes from extensive research from staff who studied successful dog parks in other communities. In addition, the city said it is interested in dog-focused events at the Lawn, like PAWfest.
After a competitive bidding process, the project was given to Zaveri Enterprises, Inc. It will cost $677,899.60, which will be paid for by SPLOST dollars.
The city council unanimously approved the park. It will be completed in one phase and is expected to open this summer.
