Over 60 people show up to give blood in honor of Gwinnett fallen officer

Family, residents and fellow officers honored fallen Gwinnett Police Officer Antwan Toney.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. — The Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office has been looking for a way to honor Officer Antwan Toney.

Gwinnett County Police Department Officer Toney was shot and killed October in the line of duty.

"We really wanted to honor officer Toney and his legacy and a blood drive is a great way to do that," Deputy Shannon Volkodav Public Information Officer with Gwinnett County Sheriff's Office said.

Volkodav reached out to Officer Toney's family to inform them of the blood drive. She said that she did not expect for them to fly all the way from Southern California to be there.

"People want to find different ways to honor him and I told her this was a great idea," Carla Johnson, Officer Toney's sister, said.

Johnson says that she understands there is a need for blood. Both she and her mother donated blood to the American Red Cross as well.

"For it to be held in his name is an honor for our family and him. And it shows that Antwan is still here, he did not die in vain, he left an impact," Johnson said.

Deputy Volkodav said around 60 people quickly signed up for the blood drive. According to Deputy Volkodav, this is the largest blood drive that she has ever seen the Sheriff's Office host.
