New judge named to preside over trial of officer charged with murdering veteran

The district attorney's office said Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson will preside over the trial.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — After a judge recently recused himself from the case of a former DeKalb County police officer charged with murder in the death of an Air Force veteran, a new one has been named to preside over the trial.

The district attorney's office told 11Alive on Wednesday that Judge LaTisha Dear Jackson has been assigned to the case.

Earlier this week, the DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston said that her office received a notice that Judge J.P. Boulee had removed himself from the Robert Olsen trial. Boston said no reason was given for the recusal.

Olsen, a former DeKalb officer is accused of fatally shooting Hill in March 2015. He was responding to an apartment complex on a suspicious person call when he said he encountered Hill, who was naked and unarmed.

Olsen said Hill "attacked" him, and, fearing for his life, he shot and killed Hill. Hill's family said he was dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Olsen was indicted on six charges: two counts of felony murder, one count of aggravated assault, one count of making a false statement and two counts of violation of oath by a public officer.

The trial was initially set to begin Feb. 25, nearly four years after Hill was killed. A new trial date has not been set yet, according to officials.
