ATLANTA — Heads up to drivers in the City of Decatur: starting today, police will begin issuing citations to violators of a new school zone safety plan.

Officers began issuing warnings to violators on October 14, but Wednesday marks the official start of enforcement.

Drivers are now asked to slow down to 25 miles per hour in these zones.

Cameras are set up at Beacon Hill Middle School, Clairemont Elementary School, Westchester Elementary School, and Winnona Park Elementary School.

Authorities said drivers exceeding the speed limit by 10+ miles per hour will receive a citation with a $100 fine for the 1st violation and $150 for any further violations. In addition, the speed cameras will be active on school days during school zone hours.
