MARIETTA, Ga. -- New speed display signs will soon go up near a Cobb County school where a crossing guard was hit and killed last year.
The board of commissioners approved the installation of the signs at their meeting Tuesday.
The signs will soon go up near Lindley Middle School and will be donated by Radarsign, LLC, as part of Cobb's pilot program. The signs let drivers know how fast they are going, which officials say have proven are effective in getting drivers to slow down.
Lamonte Roosevelt Whitaker was driving a Ford Focus while traveling in the school zone when he swerved into the center lane and started traveling on Veterans Memorial Highway. That's when police said he struck and killed Edna Umeh.
Whitaker had been traveling 46 mph in a 25 mph speed zone, according to police.
Cobb DOT, along with Georgia DOT and other partners, launched a Roadway Safety Audit last year after Umeh's death.
Among the changes being considered are medians dividing the four-lane road, and installation of a "HAWK" crossing which is a lighted, well-marked pedestrian crossing.
A GoFundMe page has been established for Umeh's family. Whitaker has pled not guilty.
